Hemro - New Brand Concept

The world’s leading coffee grinder manufacturer with the brands Mahlkönig, Ditting and Anfim is presenting its new brand concept and restructuring its management.  The management team consists of Philipp Baumberger (Chief Executive Officer - CEO), Jochen Christoph (Chief Financial Officer - CFO) and Carsten Reinke (Chief Sales and Marketing Officer - CMSO).

The German premium coffee grinder manufacturer Mahlkönig and the Swiss grinder specialist Ditting, which were brought together in 2007 under the Swiss holding Hemro AG (based in Bachenbülach, Switzerland), have been further strengthened in the last year due to the participation in the Italian grinder manufacturer Anfim.

Also, the production of grinding discs and components for the Group at the Hamburg facility has been centralized and a new assembly and office building has been acquired in Bachenbülach, near Zurich Airport.

Hemro AG is now presenting itself as a company for “global coffee grinding solutions” with the three brands Mahlkönig, Ditting and Anfim. The product lines of all three brands will be continued.

Mahlkönig stands for absolute quality standards and perfect coffee, Ditting for technical perfection, and Anfim for the Italian espresso culture and lifestyle. The use of these three brands under the umbrella brand Hemro is intended to emphasize the synergies and potential inherent in the Group. This new brand policy will be implemented gradually throughout the company from 1 April.

In order to realize the growth potential resulting from all brands in the coming years, Hemro AG has now reorganized its management structure.

Nils Erichsen, the founder of the Group, Chief Executive Officer, delegate of the Board of Directors, and current head of the Division Branded Products will resign from his position at the end of March. However, he will continue to be closely associated with the Group as an adviser for strategic projects, member of the Board of Directors and shareholder.

Philipp Baumberger, current COO and head of the Division Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM), will now take over as CEO of the entire Group, a role which he will perform from his current location in Bachenbülach. Philipp Baumberger, a Swiss citizen, with engineering background joined Ditting in 2003 and headed the industrial operations of the Group as well as the OEM-division since the merger of Ditting and MAHLKÖNIG in 2007.

The Division Branded Products will henceforth be led by Carsten Reinke as Chief Marketing & Sales Officer of the Group. Mr Reinke is based in Hamburg and began his career in the hotel business. In the last 15 years he has held management positions in the area of coffee preparation and coffee equipment at the companies Four Square (Mars), Nestle and Kaffee Partner.

The management will be rounded off with Jochen Christoph, also based in Bachenbülach, who has been Chief Financial Officer since 1 June 2012.

Furthermore, Dr. Karl Freiherr von Hahn, who has been Chairman of the Board of Directors for many years, has resigned from his position and the board. The Board of Directors will now consist of Dr. Johann Christian Jacobs as Chairman of the Board of Directors, Alexander von Schönau as Vice-Chairman and Nils Erichsen, a former delegate of the Board of Directors, as a member.

“Now that the Hemro Group has successfully completed the first five years after its establishment, I would like to withdraw from daily business, mainly because I would like to have more time for my family. I am delighted that my co-director for many years, Mr Philipp Baumberger, is taking over the role of CEO of the Hemro Group and look forward to continuing to actively support the successful development of our group of companies in the coming years,” says Nils Erichsen.

“I am delighted to have the confidence of the shareholders and the Board of Directors and the opportunity to lead the uniquely positioned Hemro Group into another phase of growth together with a formidable management team. In the future, the Hemro Group will be in a position like no other coffee grinder manufacturer to provide grinding solutions to customers who are interested in top quality coffee”, says Philipp Baumberger.

“We thank the founder of the company, Nils Erichsen, and the previous Chairman of the Board of Directors, Dr. von Hahn, for building a company which provides custors interested in the unique flavor of coffee with the grinders they need of German, Swiss or Italian origin. We are delighted that Nils Erichsen will continue to be associated with the company as a member of the Board of Directors and shareholder”, Dr. Johann Christian Jacobs comments with regard to his election as Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Discovering exclusive coffee tastes

The Hamburg based grinder manufacturer MAHLKÖNIG and the Alliance for Coffee Excellence invite to an exclusive coffee tasting at the COTECA 2012 in Hamburg.

Hamburg, 12th September 2012 I „Cup of Excellence“ – a term which makes hearts of connoiseurs and lovers of selected specialty coffees beat faster. The Hamburg based grinder manufacturer MAHLKÖNIG supports this international quality improvement programme aimed at coffee origin countries as grinder sponsor.
During the COTECA 2012 –from 20th – 22nd September in Hamburg – the Alliance for Coffee Excellence together with MAHLKÖNIG invite to a coffee tasting of a very special kind: Susie Spindler, an internationally renowned coffee-expert and co-founder of the Cup of Excellence-programme is going to initiate selected guests and journalists in the secrets and taste perceptions of the world`s best coffees. She will be assisted by a prominent guest, Cory Andreen from Berlin, the officiating World Cuptasting Champion. MAHLKÖNIG asked the finest “coffee-tongue” of the world to join the Cup of Excellence tasting and help participants both with words and deeds. Of course all experts present will readily answer questions from journalists and visitors. The exclusively selected Cup of Excellence beans will get delivered to the fairground freshly roasted by the Hamburg based coffee roaster Elbgold.

The Alliance for Coffee Excellence searches for the best green coffees of an origin country, which are identified during a several weeks lasting selection process including innumerable tastings. All coffee farmers situated in a specific country have the chance to hand in samples of their coffees, which in first instance get assessed and pre-selected by a national judging panel consisting of experienced tasters. Naturally the green coffee samples get roasted and freshly ground for each individual tasting round. After the preselection the chosen green coffees again get evaluated by an international expert jury comprising roasters and green coffee professionals. Here also various tasting turns are carried out, before the final ranking and the winner-coffee is determined.

Altogether each coffee presented at the Cup of Excellence gets ground, brewed and tasted at least five times, the top ten coffees even six times. In each country thousands of coffee samples are ground reliably and continuously equal.
For this reason the Alliance for Coffee Excellence trust in a partnership with MAHLKÖNIG and the precision grinder Guatemala Lab, which was specifically designed for use in laboratories, during tastings or in roasting plants.

Also during the Cup of Excellence tasting at the COTECA the exclusive coffees will be freshly ground and brewed. This is the only way to truly discover the multitude of aromas and taste nuances.

Don`t miss the date on Friday, 21st September from 10am to 11am, and find
out what the world`s most exclusive coffees taste like.

Preceding, a press breakfast organized by the Hamburg Messe will take place from 9am to 10am in the presence of industry representatives. (contact: Astrid Wiedemeyer, press officer COTECA, 0049/40/35969-2098, astrid.wiedemeyer@hamburg-messe.de)

MAHLKÖNIG supports the US-Barista Champions at the SCAA Annual Exposition in Portland

The capital of the federal state of Oregon, Portland, is going to be the center of the American coffee world in April this year. From April 20th to 22nd the 24th Annual SCAA Exposition and Symposium will be held there along with the United States Barista Championship (USBC).

As in the past, MAHLKÖNIG not only presents latest trends and techniques in the field of coffee-grinding as exhibitor, but as sponsor also funds the finals of the US-Barista Championship and the Brewers Cup by providing grinders and technical support.

Beforehand during six regional preliminaries the participants for the USBC in Portland are ascertained. The best six baristas of each of the preliminaries being held in the Northwest, Southwest, Southcentral, Northcentral, Northeast and Southeast will then compete against each other in Portland, in order to identify America`s best barista amongst all 36 attendees.

As in previous years, MAHLKÖNIG not only backs up the national competition in the USA, but also engages itself as grinder sponsor of the regional preliminaries. Many of the US-baristas already line up for the contest by bringing their own MAHLKÖNIG-grinders – mainly either the Espresso grinder K30 or K30 TWIN is used.

During the SCAA event numerous workshops and seminars are planned. Here participants have also the opportunity to work with MAHLKÖNIG-grinders, like for example Guatemala Labs for Cupping- and Roasting workshops or K30 Varios for the Espresso Lab. For the US-Brewers Cup two Guatemala-grinders are kept ready for the preparation of filter coffee.

Through this involvement in various national competitions, not only in the USA, MAHLKÖNIG completes its engagement on an international level where it acts as the official Espresso-grinder sponsor of the World Barista Championship, the World Latte Art Championship, the World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship and also as official grinder sponsor of the World Cuptasting Championship.

The World Barista Championship and the World Cuptasting Championship will take place in line with the World of Coffee Show in Vienna from June 12th -15th 2012, whereas the World Latte Art and World Coffee in Good Spirit Championship will be carried out during the Café & Bakery Show in Seoul from November 1st - 4th 2012.

During each one of these international competitions MAHLKÖNIG-grinders are not only made available during the actual contests  but also the preparation area, the seminar- and workshop rooms and various Espresso- and Brew-bars will be equipped with grinders by MAHLKÖNIG.

MAHLKÖNIG is presenting the entire spectrum of coffee preparation – from espresso to hand filtered coffee with the corresponding grinders at this year’s Internorga.

Visitors to the MAHLKÖNIG booth at Internorga can experience all aspects of the art of coffee making. At the espresso bar experienced baristas from the Speicherstadt Kaffeerösterei will prepare freshly roasted espresso-based drink creations and at the brew bar the skillful hand filtering of coffee will be presented as an art. At regular intervals, coffee preparation with siphon and AeroPress is celebrated here throughout the entire trade fair.

At this year’s Internorga, the absolute highlight will be the appearance of the top two baristas in the world at the MAHLKÖNIG booth. The coffee grinder manufacturer has invited the reigning world barista champion Alejandro Mendez (El Salvador) together with the runner up Pete Licata (USA) to come to Hamburg. For two days during Internorga both world class baristas will present their coffee making skills and experience at the MAHLKÖNIG trade fair booth.

Besides the brew bar and espresso bar and the presentations by the barista champions, MAHLKÖNIG is going to present various technical innovations covering all aspects of coffee grinding at the trade fair.

In addition to the patented K30 RFID which has a control and data exchange function between the espresso grinder and the bean hopper or a smart card function, MAHLKÖNIG is also introducing the connection of the K30 to conventional cash registers via integrated software and USB cable.

For filter coffee grinding, the FCG 2.0 continues to set standards. A new version will be shown at Internorga that enables grinding directly into taller French press pots of up to 1.5 l.

New model versions of the MAHLKÖNIG VARIO and the ProM are also available. The new VARIO-W is designed exclusively for grinding filter coffee not by a pre-defined time but by weight. Therefore highly sensitive scales are fitted below the ground coffee container to weigh the coffee powder to the exact gram. Thus the amount of ground coffee can always be exactly reproduced.

The ProM Espresso is the next stage in the development of the ProM Allround grinder, a pure espresso grinder. It has a large hopper holding at least 600g of espresso beans. A new display has been equipped with buttons for easy dosing of “double” or “single shot”.

MAHLKÖNIG can be visited at Internorga in Hall B2, EG 201

Communicative Coffee Grinders

Technical innovations on the subject of coffee grinding are the theme of MAHLKÖNIG GmbH & Co KG at the host in Milan from 21 - 25 October.

At this year’s host, the world’s largest trade fair for coffee and coffee technology, MAHLKÖNIG is presenting new and further developments for its popular gastronomy grinder K30 and the semi-professional models VARIO home and ProM.

Intelligent Communication. The RFID version (RFID= Radio Frequency Identificationof the popular K30 espresso grinder has been developed for the specific requirements of specialty coffee roasters and, above all, coffee bars. This technology enables a data exchange between the beans` reservoir and the grinder, meaning that control and recording functions are possible way above the counting and logging of portions ground per day. Via a quantity indicator it is possible to measure the remaining capacity and the portions that are possible. A signal warns in good time if the coffee supply is running low. These are only a few of the functions that are possible in this unique unified information system. In addition, there is also a new RFID version which functions via a smart card and is interesting, above all, for roasters who fund an espresso machine for their clients. With the RFID smart card you can ensure that the grinder genuinely only grinds the amount of coffee delivered and is blocked for additional “external grinding”. The smart card is loaded with a pre-defined grinding length (in seconds) – similar to a pay card – and is delivered to the client by the coffee roaster along with the coffee. The appliance is activated with the loaded-up smart card by holding the card against the transmitter or the grinder’s antenna. The credit balance is loaded from the card onto the grinder and the grinder is unlocked to grind, for example, 1 kg of coffee.

After the pre-defined grinding time required for 1 kg of coffee beans, for example, the grinder is blocked and only grinds again if it is activated with a new smart card.

Specialists. MAHLKÖNIG is also keeping up with the growing trend of filter coffee preparation in the gastronomy industry with a further version of the popular VARIO home. With this we don’t mean the classical filter machine methods, but the elaborate and professional filter coffee preparation using a French Press, aero-press or “Karlsbader Kanne” in so-called "brew bars". The new VARIO-W is designed exclusively for grinding filter coffee and therefore does not grind for a pre-defined time but according to weight. Highly sensitive scales which measure the coffee powder to the exact gram are fixed under the ground coffee container. This means that the amount of coffee, which is ground, can always be reproduced exactly. The grinding degree can be set infinitely variably and very finely via two slide controls.

The new ProM Espresso, a further development of the ProM all-round grinder, represents the antithesis of filter coffee grinding. It has a large hopper which takes at least 600g espresso beans. For easy dosage of double or single shots, the new display has been provided with a touch screen. To use more than one variety of espresso, the hopper can be closed by using the hopper slide and replaced. There is a video in English describing how RFID Technology functions, as well as the ProM Espresso and VARIO-W at  http://vimeo.com/25808154

Apart from their commitment as sponsor and the supply of a great number of grinders for the whole event, also the new World Barista Champion 2011 is going to benefit notably from the dedication of the Hamburg based company to coffee quality, because this years’ WBC winner will get invited to the MAHLKÖNIG headquarters in Hamburg in order to be introduced in detail to the world of grinding.

US-Barista Champions rely on MAHLKÖNIG grinders

From April 27th until May 1st 2011 America`s best baristas will compete again during the US Barista Championship in Houston (Texas). MAHLKÖNIG USA supports this top-class contest again this year as official grinder sponsor.

The US Barista Championship takes place at the “23rd SCAA Exposition and Symposium” in the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. 38 regional champions who have qualified during the preliminaries in six different US-regions will then be on the competition stage eager to win the national title. In every single region on average 30 baristas competed against each other. Those who will then participate at the final are real professionals who managed to discard a great number of highly skilled fellow competitors.

During the preliminaries roughly 65% of the Baristas worked with the K30 or K30 Twin from MAHLKÖNIG. For the US Competition in Houston around 20 participants have decided to use Espresso grinders made by MAHLKÖNIG.

The workshops which will be offered during the SCAA-event will be equipped with MAHLKÖNIG grinders as well, like the “Guatemala Lab” for the Cupping- and Roasting workshops or the “K30 Varios” for the Espresso Lab. More than 600 attendees have already registered for the numerous workshops organized by the SCAA.

As in previous years MAHLKÖNIG once more backs up the national competition just as much as the regional preliminaries in the USA as grinder sponsor. MAHLKÖNIG completes this support through their commitment also on an international level by acting as official sponsor of the World Barista Championship (WBC), which will take place from 2nd – 5th June 2011 in Colombia´s capital, Bogota.

Shortly after the WBC the world`s elite of Baristas will meet again at the SCAE World of Coffee 2011 event from June 22nd to 24th  in the Dutch city of Maastricht. There the World Latte Art, Cuptasting, Coffee in Good Spirits, Ibrik / Cezve Championships and Brewers Cup will be run. Here MAHLKÖNIG appears not only as official grinder sponsor of the World Latte Art Championship but also equips various workshops with Espresso- and Shop grinders.

London is calling!

MAHLKÖNIG is the official grinder sponsor of the WBC 2010 and presents its latest innovations in the field of coffee grinding at the associated Caffè Culture Show from 23rd until 25th June 2010.

Only a few days to go until the beginning of the Caffè Culture in London, which is considered to be this year`s most important event of the international coffee industry. Besides the fair with more than 300 exhibitors, the World Barista Championship (WBC) 2010 is taking place as well as the annual conference of the SCAE. More than 10.000 trade and business professionals from all over the world are expected to visit the event.

As the official grinder sponsor of the WBC MAHLKÖNIG not only equips the competition area but also the preparation stations and the bar zone with at least 12 grinders. At the MAHLKÖNIG booth K70 the company shows the official competition grinders especially designed for the WBC 2010 in London, along with a variety of new and approved products developed for precise fresh grinding of coffee. The brand new RFID solution (patent pending) for the K30 grinder should be particulary interesting: a cutting-edge supervision device for the controlled grinding of premium blends with precise check of dosing and grinding degree.
As MAHLKÖNIG attaches utmost importance to the perfect quality in the cup, a special grinder cleaner, called GRINDZ™, was developed. GRINDZ™ is easy to apply and helps to improve both the cleanliness of the grinding discs and the dosing precision for every portion and therefore the overall quality of every single cup of coffee!

The latest highlight in the MAHLKÖNIG portfolio is the ProM, which was recently honoured with the renowned design prize “red dot design award”. The ProM is a grinder of the latest generation, which covers the whole range of fresh grinding from Espresso to French Press. It can be employed in demanding domestic households as well as in the catering trade. The ProM as well as all other grinders exhibited at the Caffè Culture can be tested by visitors on site and thus demonstrate their ability.

Of course, perfect grinding cannot be expected without the adequate commodity – the perfect coffee bean. Apart from supporting professional Baristas, MAHLKÖNIG has been involved in coffee growing in the origin since 2007. Together with Probat and La Marzocco MAHLKÖNIG runs the Songwa coffee farm in Tanzania. The three companies have teamed-up to provide their clients, employees and other actors involved in the coffee industry with the unique service of offering fact-finding tours to Tanzania – an extraordinary chance to study intensely all facets of a coffee farm. Fairgoers have the opportunity to exclusively experience the excellent quality of the Songwa-coffee while visiting the MAHLKÖNIG booth at the Caffè Culture.

Design award for MAHLKÖNIG grinder ProM

For the second time a MAHLKÖNIG grinder has been honoured with the popular red dot design award.

Hamburg – March 30th 2010

Now excellent design is officially confirmed: The MAHLKÖNIG grinder ProM, which was launched in autumn last year by the Hamburg based manufacturer, not only convinces demanding coffee conoisseurs and caterers, but also the expert jury of the renowned red dot design competition. A few days ago the ProM received the award for outstanding design in the category red dot award: product design 2010. All products which were honoured during the competition had to convince an international jury of design experts.

The distinguished design of the ProM Allround grinder was developed by the well-known product designer Carsten Gollnick, who also created the espresso grinder K30 ES for MAHLKÖNIG (red dot design prize in 2005). This grinder marks the beginning of the success story of the MAHLKÖNIG Grind-on-demand espresso grinders as indispensable tools for successful baristas.

The ProM as a professional grinder for the food service industry and the ambitious private coffee connoisseur ads another chapter to this success story. The grinder stands for fresh grinding of espresso in portions straight into the port-a-filter as well as for freshly ground filter coffee – infused either by hand or prepared through French press. With the ProM, MAHLKÖNIG sets again a new milestone in coffee grinding – the expertise of professionals, combined with exclusive and outstanding product design.

Designers and companies from 57 nations with 4,252 products altogether entered the challenge in the category red dot award: product design.
“Due to their brilliant design and innovative approaches these products stand out from the crowd and were therefore able to prove their quality during one of the world`s hardest design contests”, comments the initiator of the red dot design award, design expert Prof. Dr. Peter Zec.

The award ceremony in front of more than 1.000 guests will take place on July 5th 2010 in the Aalto Theater in Essen, Germany. Afterwards the ProM will be on display in a four-week special exhibition in the red dot design museum on the premises of the Zeche Zollverein in Essen.

The red dot design award
The red dot design award, which dates back to the year 1955, today is one of the world`s biggest and most renowned design challenges. It subdivides into the disciplines “red dot award: product design, red dot award: communication design and red dot award: design concept. In 2009 there were more than 12.000 registrations from more than 60 countries in total.

Press release ProM - Technical perfection meets exquisite design

Hamburg, September 25th 2009. Professional functionality and innovative design don`t have to be mutually exclusive. This is proved by the exciting new ProM coffee grinder from MAHLKÖNIG. The concept for the ProM evolved from the synthesis of the demanding professional’s requirement for precise fresh grinding and the critical consumer’s desire for functionality and design. This clearly defines the field of application for this new grinder in the professional coffee industry as well as for private connoisseurs.

The ProM stands for fresh, portion controlled grinding of espresso straight into the port-a-filter, just as it stands for fresh, portion controlled grinding of filter coffee for extraction by your favorite method: stovetop, drip filter, siphon or French press. Professional quality 65mm grinding discs assure a consistent and homogeneous grind portion after portion. Precisely aligned adjusting knobs for both grind fineness and grinding time allow exacting control over the grind setting and dose amount - an absolute must for anyone who demands exquisitely prepared coffee!

For the perfect preparation of espresso, the coffee beans are freshly ground directly into the port-a-filter. The grinding process starts automatically as soon as the port-a-filter is inserted into the port-a-filter holder, allowing hands-free operation, of course, to offer more convenience. Fresh ground coffee for other brewing methods is dispensed directly into a sleek removable storage bin, which when not in use stores seamlessly at the rear of the hopper. The hopper of the ProM has a capacity of 250g.

The surface finish of brushed stainless steel and high-quality matt black plastic fits just as harmoniously in the modern domestic design aesthetic, as it does in the operational areas of the professional coffee industry. The independent, exceptional design, the professional grinding, and the compact style of the ProM meet the requirements of the sophisticated coffee lover at home, as well as the needs of food service businesses that serve between 50 and 150 cups of coffee a day.

Providing customers with a variety of leading-edge coffees is a trend that is becoming more and more important in the coffee industry, which represents an ideal application area for the ProM. Due to the slim design and small footprint, several grinders with various types of coffee can easily be placed next to each other – even in a restricted space. Precise metal adjusting knobs with clearly indicated scales, that are located on the right side of the grinder, enable a simple, head-on handling.

The ProM owes its compact and extraordinary appearance to the industrial designer Carsten Gollnick, who has previously created the K30 Single and K30 Twin espresso grinders for MAHLKÖNIG.

MAHLKÖNIG is setting a milestone in the field of coffee grinding by launching the ProM grinder, which not only sets new technical standards, but also makes a great visual impact – expert grinding knowledge combined with exclusive product design.

ProM - Interview - Innovation needs passion!

Interview with industrial designer Carsten Gollnick about the development of the MAHLKÖNIG ProM.

KaffeeSatz: Was the creation of the ProM a specific challenge for you?

Gollnick: In some ways it was, because the grinder is developed for two different contexts – household and the food service business. On one hand it must fulfill the requirements of the demanding professionals in the hotel and restaurant scene, on the other hand the grinder has to satisfy the private coffee connoisseurs.

KaffeeSatz: How long was the process of development of the design?

Gollnick: The pure creation, which means the time for the drafts, took approx. three to four weeks. The whole process from the first sketch to the prototype took much longer, about one and a half to two years. At the beginning we started with the technical briefing because it is essential to know from the beginning which kind of technology should be used. After the first briefing follows the design phase with the first sketches. These sketches are intensively discussed within our team. In continuation we optimize the sketches and we select two of them to present to the customer. After the selection of one idea the process of technical adaptations is very long. During this process I work very closely with the engineers at MAHLKÖNIG.

KaffeeSatz: You are working for several customers in the household sector, food service and interior design area. What is the special task about designing a coffee grinder?

Gollnick: The ProM is already the third grinder I developed for MAHLKÖNIG. Before I designed as well the grinders K30 ES and K30 TWIN. The special task this time was the target of using it in the small professional environment as well as in demanding private households. The technology is for professionals, the slim design enables the use in kitchens / bars with small space. Very important was also that the grinder can not only grind espresso directly into the port-a-filter but grinds filter coffee or French-Press in the same high quality. Additionally to the espresso preparation Filter coffee or French-Press gains more importance and the different extraction methods are celebrated intensively. Here also the ProM is to prove its strengths!
Very important for the design was the appearance as stand alone design object in the process of preparing coffee and not a design in dependence on espresso machines.

KaffeeSatz: Do you enjoy drinking coffee?

Gollnick: I would not call myself a coffee drinker but rather a coffee freak. At home and in my office I use professional espresso machines with professional grinders. Of course I enjoy my coffee at home but in the office our equipment really has to prove itself with the amount of espresso consumed. Honestly: the professional Barista scene is really special with its requirements. That means if you want to create something for these coffee enthusiasts you have to have one thing apart from profound knowledge, which is  - passion for coffee!
