Generally I am a big fan of Mahlkonig grinders. I own 6 coffee shops and use the GBW & GBS series for our espresso. I recently ordered the X64. I immediately noticed a wobble/rattle sound during grinding. This is not typical for any of the Mahlkonig grinders I have used so I reached out to shop@mahlkoenig.us After some communication for a return Auth I sent in the grinder for a replacement. They were gracious to send me a replacement unit. However, the replacement unit has the same rattle. Apparently this is going to be the case with all of them. It seems to grind fine and has the good Mahlkonig burrs, but the rattle causes the experience feel cheap and makes me worry about long-term reliability.

The Mahlkönig X64 SD Single Dose Home Grinder is a household electric coffee grinder that requires a power connection. To use the grinder, fill the included hopper with whole coffee beans of your choice. Since flat burrs achieve a significantly higher proportion of particles with the same shape and size than conical burr grinders, they are the ideal choice to achieve much more evenly ground coffee—and thus a higher quality and cleaner flavor. Compared to conical burrs, flat burrs also ensure greater dosing accuracy and hence a more consistent taste experience. How long do the burrs last on the X64 SD Single Dose Home Grinder?

The Mahlkönig X64 SD Single Dose Home Grinder flat steel burrs have an average lifespan of 500 kg of coffee ground through them. However, the actual maximum output depends on the selected grind size, the type of beans, and the roast level of the coffee. All these factors influence the actual degree of wear on the burrs. Changes in the fineness and the temperature of the ground coffee will indicate the burrs’ degree of wear and tear. We recommend changing the burrs when the ground coffee appears too coarse and/or too warm.

How do I clean the X64 SD Single Dose Home Grinder?

We recommend cleaning any home coffee grinder at least once a week with our food safe GRINDZ coffee cleaner. Simply grind GRINDZ through your grinder, just like coffee beans, to remove old coffee residues and coffee oils from the grinder casing and the burrs. Detailed information on the cleaning procedure can be found in the instructions manual for the X64 SD Single Dose Home Grinder or the GRINDZ grinder cleaner. GRINDZ is available in our shop.

The surface of the grinder can be wiped with a damp, lint-free cloth. You should never use chemical detergents to clean your grinder since these could cause damage to the surface materials or even end up in your coffee.

Can you grind products other than coffee with the X65 SD Single Dose Home Grinder?

The Mahlkönig X64 SD is designed specifically for grinding coffee beans. It is not suitable for grinding other products such as pepper, spices, poppy seeds or grains. Grinding products other than coffee beans with the X64 SD Single Dose Home could damage the grinder, incurring repair costs from a professional Mahlkönig service partner.

How do you select the right grind size for the desired brew method?

On the back of the grinder lid of the X64 SD Single Dose Home Grinder you will find an easy guidance on a scale of 0 to 12 to dial in the right grind size for your coffee. We recommend setting of 0 to 2 for espresso setting, from 2 to 7 for filter setting, and 7 to 12 for coarse settings that are suitable for e.g. cold brew coffee. This is an indication that may vary between different types of coffees and roast grades.

How do you switch between espresso and other types of coffee grinding?

The X64 SD Single Dose Home Grinder features a stepless grind adjustment knob that allows you to change the positioning of the burrs without predefined “steps”. This is essential for making espresso, as it allows you to make tiny, nearly invisible, changes to the grind size on the micron-level to dial in the perfect shot (rather than being limited to a few pre-determined sizes).

To change your grind size, simply turn the knob. You can go from a setting for very fine espresso all the way to a coarse setting for cold brew coffee by turning the knob. Ensure to empty the grinding chamber and run through all coffee residuals in your X64 SD Single Dose Home Grinder when adjusting the grind size to a finer setting, to prevent the adjustment mechanism from sticking or damage.

How do I use the grinder accessories?
